Applying for Medicaid in New York

Medicaid is a health program available for certain eligible individuals and families in the U.S. Jointly funded by state and federal governments, Medicaid is a means tested program typically available to individuals and families with low incomes and for people with certain disabilities who cannot afford medical care. It is the largest course of funding for medical and health-related services to people with limited income throughout the nation. At this time, the fastest growing aspect of Medicaid is nursing home coverage. It is an important issue to address in regard to elder law. In order to qualify, recipients must have high medical bills, receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or meet other certain financial requirements.

Medicaid covers a plethora of health services, but age, finances, living arrangements and your family situation could always be determining factors. In managed care plans there is usually no co-pay for patients, except for pharmaceutical care. If you used a Medicaid card however, some co-pays may apply. The maximum co-pay that you will have to pay in a year could reach up to $200. Some people, however, are fully exempt from paying co-pays altogether. Talk to your attorney today to find out if you are eligible for exemption. Medicaid could cover any of the following services and amenities:

  • Nursing home care
  • Family planning services
  • Prenatal care
  • Emergency ambulance transportation costs
  • Costs accrued by patients under 21 in the Child/Teen Health Program
  • Psychiatric health care for those under 21 or over 65
  • Home health care
  • Inpatient and outpatient hospital services
  • Dental and preventative health care
  • Health clinic services
  • Smoking cessation agents

There are several different locations where applications are available, you get them by phone or you can contact a facilitated enroller (FE). For people who are over the age of 65, are blind or disables, chronically ill or in need of serious medical coverage and nursing facilities should go through their local department of social services (LDSS). In order to apply you will need to be able to show proof of citizenship or your immigration status and proof of any income including retirement, veteran benefits and social security. You will also need proof of where you live, show your insurance benefit card if you have one and show your Medicare benefit card. It is helpful if you have your birth certificate so you can have proof of our age and if you are U.S. citizen, you must provide a valid social security number as well.

Guiding You through the Steps
